My Trip to Big Bone Lick
Being basically Kentucky's La Brea tar pits Big Bone Lick State Park is located in Boone County. The Megafauna of the Pleistocene epoch roughly 11,000 years ago were drawn to this area by Salt licks,At the same time the area was marshy and full of deep bogs that many of the animals became mired in.
40,000 - 11,000 year old Mastodon Skull displayed in the Gift shop and museum area, excavated at Big Bone Lick |
After seeing the displays I went on the self guided tour of nature trails. In 1803 Thomas Jefferson decreed that the explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark put together an expedition to the area.Finding Fossils was considered of great importance during the enlightenment period.
Quagmires , Bogs and sinkholes dot the area to this day so it is wise stay on the trail .
After hiking around ,I ended up on the Bison trail
